meantime, the obvious short-term remedy is to plug in a USB mouse,

[i know you already thought of that, BTW  ]

Unfortunately, it's not that simple, because the trackpad is still clicking randomly.
I figure I'd have to open the MBP up and physically disconnect the trackpad.

BUT... for some strange reason, it's not as "mushy" anymore. It seems more responsive now and not giving me random clicks (for the time being). But I have no idea what is triggering this.

Subject: Sticky, trigger-happy trackpad
It seems the fun never stops. Without apparent reason, my trackpad has transformed into a squishy, noiseless thing from the "crisp" loud clicker it used to be. And not to stop there, it has started clicking, double and triple clicking randomly to the point that it is difficult to type something without having it erased or mangled in the process thanks to some inadvertent highlighting. If I move the mouse pointer to a different part of the screen, then it will steal the focus away from window I am typing on of course. <sigh>

Looks like Apple is rolling out a forum upgrade... But what I found most telling on MacRumors (which is probably representative of most any Mac board) was how prevalent the sentiment is that Apple is doing some serious "vanishing acts" with unfavorable posts and what and how negatively it is perceived (as it should be). I added my bit to the fire as well, of course.

Incredible. Not that I want the guy to burn. But we can't let our political leaders get away with this type of disgusting corruption scott-free. I hope he gets his due the next time around.

In Miami, I'm more interested in visiting nearby natural parks and the Florida Keys, the beach, etc. I'm not so keen on city itself. (Sorry Gamoe, it's just that I've been there before, like NYC Boston and DC, but of these NYC has so much to see).

Hey don't worry, I'm not too keen on it myself! And I haven't gone to the keys in a long while! There's lots to to there. We can have a drink at Sloppy Joe's.

Right, just bought the tickets. I'll be in Chicago from 22/09 to 26/09, then in S. Francisco from 26/09 to 30/09, then in Miami from 30/09 til 03/10. Then back to NYC to catch the flight back to Brazil on the 5th.

I was about to complain about you staying over only a day till I realized your date format was different. This is good, because while I'll be taking classes already, we have a full weekend to visit the keys or wherever you'd like to go. And of course, you don't have to worry about where to stay while you're here. e-Mail me any details, as we seem notoriously bad sometimes at catching each other for chat.

If you "only" ride such short distances your chain won´t be challenged too much. Just a few drips of oil after three months of riding. No need for special bicycle grease, which is expensive. Long distance riders usually use motor oil.

I have some 3-in-one "household" (I think they call it "multipurpose" now- It's an old can) oil. So I guess I'll just use that. And I'll get some motor oil when that runs out.

Just make sure, that the brake pads are adjusted from time to time to compensate for the loss of rubber on the pad surface due to braking.

I didn't know they actually needed adjusting. But that makes loads of sense. I've never done it before, so I'll have to look into it.

If you are not familiary with doing such kind of things, start with an experienced guy next to you who will have a look at your work and can interfere if something gets severly wrong. Non-working brakes can cost your life.  :simon:

Unfortunately, I don't know anybody who can really help me right now. I'm in the break before school starts again and I want to finish working on this and some other projects I have before I start again. So I guess I'll just have to walk into the local bicycle shop and get some help there, even if it'll cost me.

As for the drivetrain; it would be useful to know what kind of components are combined with your bike. Some additional photos would be helpful.

This is what I got, euphras: Shimano c101 MegaRange 7-speed

My preliminary last point: how tall are you? I have a vast feeling that this frame is way too small for you...

Subject: 2010 Bicycle Revival
I'm tweaking my bike, readying it for use come next semester. I'm planning to ride bike to school and back. It's a 15 minute walk, so it shouldn't be too much of a challenge, but it would constructively increase my physical activity during the day, which is my aim. I've painted the handlebars (mostly to keep rust out) after sanding out a little bit of rust and polishing it, I installed a new saddle on it (for reference), new lights (old ones stopped functioning no apparent reason) changed the handlebar grips (the old ones had strangely melted) and I got a new horn for it.

Unfortunately, the most important parts of the bike- the chain, breaks, shifter, etc. I don't know much about, unlike other appletalkers, and I'm scared to hell to touch for fear of breaking. I already accidentally managed to open up one shifter and break a little piece of plastic that surrounds the cable coming from the shifter. It doesn't look like anything vital, still I'm wary of tinkering with it any more than I need to. I know I need to lubricate the chain, gears, etc. But what more can I/should I do before taking it out for regular usage after a while of it being stored? Keep in mind, I don't want to complicate myself too much here, and I'm hoping to finish my tweaks this week.

Here's an old pic of my bike:

I'll post a new one once I'm done.

Subject: Safari Extensions
Following on the announcement of Safari 5, what extensions are you using? I just recently updated myself (via software update, I didn't bother downloading it manually) and I find shortly very useful, as I often place shortened URLs in my tweets. I'm also using the acclaimed Adblock, and I am trying out LastPass extension, as I had heard about it, but never tried it before. I do not like Twitter for Safari with its huge pixel-grabbing toolbar.

Thanks madra. Tried your suggestion. Your link caught me by surprise. Had no idea it would take me straight to the local web interface. Unfortunately, I seem no closer to an answer than before. No errors. Only digital denial. I'll have to work more on it later.

You can put PDFs and other files in there for reading on both devices. Wikipedia has a full list of supported formats.

The e-ink displays look like paper. They really do look like static printed images. It is as fully readable in direct sunlight as your average paperback novel. The whole point of the e-Ink displays is that they are much closer to real paper/ink. The lack of backlight is not a negative, it is part of the whole reason some people prefer it over traditional LCD technology. The e-Ink displays will not tire your eyes the same way, nor will they shine light in your face.* They also consume a lot less power, allowing these e-readers a minimum of weeks before a recharge, and they will retain the last page accessed on the display without any power cost whatsoever. It will not continually drain batteries like LCDs do.

I do wish they were cheaper, but I think it's unfair to complain about a still relatively nascent commercial technology which just got a major price drop. I really wish color where here now, but it will come, and let's be honest: the vast majority of novels and textbooks don't contain many color illustrations.

  • I often fall asleep while reading physical books in bed, lit by an overhead light. On the other hand, reading on my netbook or Mac often tends to keep me from sleeping. I can only surmise that lighting via an overhead source and backlighting have a different effect on the body, and backlighting does not seem conducive to sleep. Yet another consideration in favor of e-Ink.

Also, what's a cheap place to rent a car - I'm planning this as a road trip after all.

Avis is very widespread (and highly advertised) in the U.S. Not sure if they're necessarily the cheapest, though.

Subject: Nook or Kindle?
I've been watching eBook Readers take off with interest, hoping to see one with all the features I want one day. (Short list: color, touchscreen e-ink for highlighting, drawing and handwriting recognition, no ability for publisher/company to recall books silently or track you without user approval) Though we're not there yet, it gives me great pleasure to see how far things have advanced in the last few years/months, including very importantly, the prices. Now, I'm not quite ready to commit to any particular eBook reader, but the two that seem to stand out are the Barnes and Noble Nook and the Amazon Kindle. Amazon just announced a new Wi-Fi only Kindle for $140 with a better e-ink screen and Barnes and Noble  sells its own Wi-Fi only e-Ink/LCD combo Nook at $150. The color LCD looks nice, but I'm thinking it would drain the batteries a lot faster than the full e-Ink Kindle screen. And there are other differences of course.

So my question: Which one would you get right now, and why?

Why I didn't mention the iPad: In my view, though the iPad overlaps with the eBook reader category, it is in fact, in another category in itself. I might do some (article, etc.) reading on the iPad, but I wouldn't get one for any kind of long-term book reading. Instead, I would get one of these, especially at these price points.
