Hopefully, this ‘Ping’ thingy can be disabled. Otherwise, I think I’ll be sticking with iTunes 9 for as long as humanly possible.

Ah, camping. Something I failed entirely to consider, since it's something I generally refuse to allow to enter my world. ;-)

For a situation like that, though, I can see how a backup would be useful. If out camping, I'd probably just keep ky phone on airplane mode most of the time, too.

having an iPod that doesn't drain your phone battery is pretty good too
The iPod in the iPhone barely drains the battery at all. Playing Scrabble or 2-Across for fifteen minutes drains more battery than listening to music non-stop for three hours.

Congrats, madra!

The biggest advantage of the iPhone over my old iPod Touch for me has, surprisingly to myself, been 3G. Going online walking down the street or on the train has proved almost indispensible, though I didn’t think it would be of much use to me when I got the phone.

And actually, I’ve been quite lucky, too, price-wise: when my first iPhone was pickpocketed in London in May and I reported the claim with my travel insurance, they paid me back the full price of an unlocked iPhone, which was about £640, or £60 more than I’d paid for the (locked) iPhone to begin, including the six-month lock-in period. So all in all, I ended up only paying about £520 for the phone and a six-month contract that includes five hours of free talk, unlimited free texts, and 20 GB of data traffic per month.

I have about 1 GB of free space on my iPhone, too. Never had any problems from it, that I know of. Never used the automatic space-filler, though.

Considering the weather here lately, I’m afraid I’d have to accept that particular epithet.

Though I would have thought an Irishman living in Manchester would be rather glad to have some of his thunder redirected away from him!

Actually … I’m fairly sure I’ve posted from the ferry between Helsingør (Elsinore, DK) and Helsingborg (S) before, on my way back from my parents’ place.

Sorry to steal your thunder. :P

Unless you need to leave San Francisco and go to other places around the Bay Area, you don’t really need a car there, either. Buses and the BART/MUNI system work quite well, and the city’s not too big, so you can actually walk most places (if you’re a keen walker, that is).

If you do want to go outside the city and explore the Bay Area, though, a car will be most useful.

Around these parts (=basically all of Europe), Avis are among the more expensive options, with Sixt and Hertz being much cheaper. Local rental outlets are of course the cheapest, except if you need to rent the car in NY and return it in FL, for example, in which case local outlets tend to have outrageous one-way fees.

Indeed. It doesn’t always work with addresses, either. Chinese addresses, for example, often have it stumped (no wonder, since everything is backwards and half the information can be left out at the discretion of the writer). And with phone numbers, it has to account for international numbers, which can indeed be anything from five (Iceland) to twelve (Austria) digits in length.

That’s not new to iOS, though—URL, phone number, and address recognition has been there all along. :P

I agree about it needing a landscape lock. I’ve never used the portait lock, and I can’t really imagine myself ever doing so; but a landscape lock would be dead useful.

And I still miss the double-click-to-get-to-music-controls. :(
