This seems to be a bug in Safari for Windows. It may already have been reported to http://bugs.webkit.org; but I have not checked. You might want to try their first.

On Windows (XP; I don't have access to Vista), Safari returns an undefined for the windows.print() and it's variants; but completely suppresses any messages that should be passed to the JavaScript console.

Not my place to say; but you should not worry about something simple as window.print() with a browser that is still in beta and should not be people's main browser. Just my 2 cents.

Cheers.

D'oh! I forgot all about this!

Sorry!

I'll give the new version a try, though.

All I see is a prompt for a name and password at the new URL, however.

In the upper right-hand corner, there are two links (or buttons, if you will); 'Sign-up' and 'Forgot Password'. If you don't see these, let me know and please also let me know your browser version. I've only tested with Safari 3.x beta on Mac OS X 10.4.10, so I am not sure how this will look in other browsers.

And talking about 'other browsers', I am working on making the application compatible with all browsers. I'm in the bug fix mode right now to reach 1.0 ASAP. Once 1.0 is out I will finish the work for making the app work and look identical on all browsers.

If you still have trouble please let me know.

Thanks,
Farhan

Hello everyone,

It took me a while and I have finally uploaded and new version of my app. It is now up to version 0.8 beta. There have been numerous changes, both under-the-hood and front-end wise. A brief change log is as follows:

Version 0.8 beta:

  • Ability to import flat OPML files has been added. This functionality is limited in a sense that the OPML file need to sitting on a server that is accessible via internet and does not require authentication. What I consider to be full support of this feature is coming.
  • Overhauled the daemon that was used for refreshing and adding new feeds.
  • Changes to the 'Forgot Password' section. It now shows the hint for the user id and if you still can't recall the password, you can reset it. Saves a lot of emails from going out.
  • Add a section to show feed information as test. Will expand this in the next couple of releases. Right now, you can only get at it from the
Profile > Subscriptions section.
  • Added pagination, proper pagination to the articles and search sections.
  • Changed few graphics that I didn't like.
  • Various other bug fixes and code trimming

I have moved the application to the following URL: http://wiredtomato.com/reader

I will be moving your information from the old test DB to the new one over this weekend, if it is okay with you. Otherwise let me know.

I want to thank you all for helping me with this little project of mine. I really do appreciate all your time and efforts.

Madra: I was hoping if you would do the honors and whip-up a nice little icon for this application. Send me an email and we'll talk, if you are interested. For pay of course.

Cheers,
Farhan

Edit: The test app is still available at the old address, so you don't have to switch, if you don't want.

It's now workin again. Two points i've noticed so far:

- If i'm on the text level i would appreciate a GUI based element to navigate back to the list of topics
- there are some elements that are not THAT self explanatory. On the text level there is a "ball" or "point" at the right, which i'm not sure what it's function is (probably reload?!?). I'd suggest to implant small roll-over-effect controlled text fields which describe the function of the buttons when i hover  the cursor over them

By "text level", I'm assuming you mean the actual text of the article (if not please feel free to correct me).
  • For your first point, I'm working out a new navigation toolbar layout, not a drastic change; but it should make it a tad more informative. I will post the mock ups once I digitize them for all to comment on.
  • For the second point, I would love to; but iPhone does not support "tooltips" (but I will add this to the app so it appears in Safari). The closest it gets to tooltips is when you tap and hold on a link and it pop-ups a "call out" box (like google maps or something similar to what you see when you click and drag a link in Safari) with the title of the link and it's url.

When you are viewing an article the little "point" next to the "flag" shows the "read" status of the article and initially it is grayed out; which represents an article that has been read. When you click it, it will turn blue, which means the article has not been read. I wanted a simple way of toggling between these two states and that is what I figured was the best way of doing it without adding a caption next to the graphic. On a similar note, the "flag" and "unflag" states work the same way.

Anyway insha, I'd be glad to help, but like others on here, I have no iPhone, so I can only test it out on Safari.

Thank you for volunteering. You will need Safari 3.x beta; I haven't tested it in Safari 2. Here's the url: http://foreverinbeta.net/reader (I should have added the url to the site in my original post)

I had made quite a few changes to the app on the 4th. The new version of the app is 0.6 beta. Give it a go and let me know how it goes. I will be migrating a new version either tonight or tomorrow night, so the sight might be down for a little bit.

Thank you for testing this out.

Madra and euphras,

Thank you. I will be uploading the app to my test server either tonight or by tomorrow night, the latest. Once I get home I will email the link to the web application to both of you.

When you are testing the application, please, please be brutal in your feedback.

BTW - congrats on getting to the stage were you're thinking of releasing an app built with RoR.  i'm stuck in that annoying loop of continually working through the first three or four chapters in the 'agile web development with rails' book, because i always end up getting side-tracked wi other things and then - by the time i get back to rails - having forgotten what little i've learned and having to start all over again.

Thank you. I went through the same thing when I started on that book, something about that book that make your mind wander, I still haven't finished it; but now I'm just using it as a reference (along with the online API reference).

As for the application, it's not a terribly complicated web app for one, and given that I am (primarily) targeting the iPhone it's fairly simple. Also, I am learning (without forgetting) a lot of things; but I guess that's always the case with anyone's first app. One thing for sure, Rails framework is extensive and a lot bigger than I thought it was before I started working this application.

Subject: Beta Testing
Hi everyone,

It' been a while since I've been here. I have been busy with a project and also busy petting my iPhone. :)

I need a favor from some of the more daring folks on this board. I have been developing my very first Rails app for the iPhone and now I am at a stage where I can put out an alpha of it for testing. Is there anyone willing to test this application and provide their feedback?

The application is an feed reader (I know not very original; but I had to begin somewhere). You will need Safari 3 beta to use it in Mac OS X and Windows; but ideal would be if you have an iPhone.

If anyone is interested please feel free to send me an email.

Cheers,
Farhan

Me three.

I have not had any with any of the updates. So I update as soon as it becomes available. I backup all my media and iTunes library files; so I'm not too worried about an update crapping out on me.

Like Simon, I too am looking forward to more iTunes Plus tracks.

Cheers.

Long time no post insha. Hello!

Hello there. I have been busy with work and family; but it is nice to be back.

Quote by i5m:
The lack of subversion support is odd. Sure it'll be coming. As will ruby/rails stuff. I'd be dead surprised if it didn't.

I understand about the rails not being included in the 1.0; but subversion is a no-brainer, as far as I am concerned. I hope the subversion and rails stuff is sooner than later. I read the post by John Gruber on Coda, I guess I understand what he's saying; but I feel that he did not scrutinize the app enough; then again it's still early. Perhaps if I have time I will go feature-by-feature and post review on my bolg after a few days of working with Coda.

Off topic: I need to have a logo and possibly stationary designed for a company I'm hoping to get up and running. Anyone here know of someone good?

Here's my take on Coda:

1) UI is fabulous and a pleasure to work with.
2) The concept is old, RadRails/Eclipse has had this same concept for a long time now; albeit this is a modified version of that concept.
3) The books feature is awesome.
4) I'm definitely typing more, especially after being used to TextMate, the source editor seems like a step backward, at least at this stage.
5) The help is bad and their support page is only FAQ with few questions. I think they should have had a forum or something up.
6) I would still stick to doing RoR projects in TextMate and/or RadRails; otherwise I see myself working twice as much; but this is just my first impression. As I use it for more than a day I'm sure (hope) some issues will be cleared up.
7) Haven't had a chance to try out the collaboration feature; since I'm the only one that works on the project.
8) Subversion? I don't see Coda as being able to connect to subversion and import projects (or "sites"). I'm surprised, since if you have collaboration, I would think Subversion would be right there next to it; or did I miss something?

I think they rushed this our for the Apple Design Awards (or whatever their called). More to come later...

Ciao,
Farhan

Indeed, it will "majorly suck". I guess I won't be jumping on the 802.11n bandwagon anytime soon; it would have been nice to get a faster connection for my home wi-fi network, especially using my less than a year old Core Duo Macs!

My sole concern is how or what will be my upgrade path for the my Core Duo iMac and Macbook? Will Apple offer the Airport Extreme cards for all (or at least Intel based) Macs or will I have to buy new Macs for the 802.11n?

So far my digging for information is pointing to the latter.  :-(
