I wonder what Art Vandelay was talking about at the other place.

I think I get it now. It appears he was tal about the $10 upgrade DVD, not the $29 DVD.

There are plenty of people who use CS4 and have none of the issues you suffered from so there must be more to it than CS4 alone.

well, i sincerely hope so.  logically it shouldnae be CS4.  enough people around the world use adobe's stuff that i'd expect thousands of people to have had the same problems as me.  still, my leopard probs were so inexplicably voodoo that i willnae be able to relax until i've got CS4 installed and a few restarts under my belt.

well, adobe CS4 is all installed and updated to the current versions and, so far, everything is just diggety.  mind you, i havenae risked a restart yet.  i'm too scared!

couple more 'newbies':

printer dialogue detects 'nearby printers' [this is probably just a rewording of the 'bonjour' stuff from before - but a lot more user friendly]:
[Image: http://www.appletalker.net/grafix/SLprinter.png]

setting up the 'nearby printer':
[Image: http://www.appletalker.net/grafix/SLprinter2.png]

print dialogue seems to contain more app specific wording.  note the 'mail' popup for the print settings and the references to 'message' in the options underneath.  also, the 'keep apparent font size' option is new to me. dunno what relevance it has on a mac tho' where screen font size = print font size anyway.  could this be something to do with the micro$oft exchange integration?
[Image: http://www.appletalker.net/grafix/SLprinter3.png]

one more...

screengrabs are now saved with the filename 'screen shot' followed by the date and time, as opposed to the previous 'picture 1', 'picture 2'... etc.

*sigh!* - it seems that not everything 'under the bonnet' in snow leopard has been dragged kicking and screaming to the white heat cutting edge:

c'mon apple. for feck's sake. ruby has been on version 1,9,1 since january and rails has been on version 2,3,3 since july.  couldn't you at least have updated to the current point numbers?  :brick:

nuvver one:

enabling the root account in snow leopard is still done in the leopard way [ie. under the directory utility 'edit' menu] - except that directory utility no longer lives in /applications  or even /applications/utilities under snow leopard, but is buried away in  /system/coreservices.

had me confusticated that did, til i found it!

I take that as just another way Apple is trying to tell people to stop fscking around with root accounts. :simon:

They should have kept 1.8.7 and installed 1.9.1 as well. There are still issues with gems, etc not being compatible.

I've both installed on OSX and at work on Windows (1.8.6 on Windows). And everytime I try to use 1.9.1 for something, I hit an issue with gem compatibility.

some more for ya's:

i got this message, when i doubleclicked an old pict file and preview tried to open it:
[Image: http://www.appletalker.net/grafix/SLpict.png]

i guess we can take it from this that the pict format's days are numbered and it's no longer going to be supported by apple.  if you've got any old pict files you want to keep, now might be a good time to think about converting them into something more durable.

  - for one less proprietory format to worry about    - as it was apple's format, in the first place

slightly more worryingly, i'm finding that snow leopard's menubar seem to be a bit flakey:

this morning when i launched cyberduck, i got its menu overlaid on top of the finder:
[Image: http://www.appletalker.net/grafix/SLmenuglitch.png]

clicking into the finder and then back into cyberduck cured it.

then, just now, when i logged into the root account i noticed this:
[Image: http://www.appletalker.net/grafix/SLmenuglitch2.png]

i logged out and back in again, but it was stil the same.  it seems that, under snow leopard, root has changed his name to roc  [at least as far as fast user switching is concerned] :hmm:

i dinnae actually use the root account as such [i just logged in to make sure it was active], but i need to have the root user enabled, otherwise i wouldnae be able to do any sudo-ing in the terminal

.... i think

That's incorrect.

Sudo on OS X works regardless of the root account being active. I use sudo all the time (to forward special ports) and I never activate my root account.

For security reasons OS X users are encouraged to not activate the root account at all. Which is probably why Apple is hiding root account activation more and more with every release.

hence the  '... i think' added as an afterthought to my above post.  i had a feeling that i'd used sudo before i activated the root account - but then i had a similar feeling that i'd previously tried using sudo without having the root account activated and it hadnae worked.

o well, i stand corrected.   :clown:

No worries.

But if I were you I'd give it a try. Verify that you can deactivate root and still use sudo. If so, your system would probably be a tad more secure if you left root off.

I had to activate my root account for something a while back (though I can’t remember what it was), and was pretty much sweating the whole time through, till I was logged back in as myself and had safely deactivated the root account again.

Also: Huh? Snow Leopard’s out?
