funnily enough, that was one of the bugs i thought they *had* ironed out coz, the first time i fired up SL after installing it and then diconnected a server, the finder seemed scarcley to miss a beat.  but since then, i've had that boring old 'molasses-mode' happen several times.

i think there's a certain irony in the fact that - after all the clamouring for the finder to be brought kicking and screaming into the 21st cenury - the new cocoa finder actually seems worse than the one it replaced.   i bet all those people who warned us not to expect a cocoa finder to be a panacaea will be going round with smug 'i told you so' grins on their faces now.

  • copying several GB of movie files from one firewire drive to another earlier and the screen went black [screensaver mode kicking in i reckon].  wouldnae wake up again, no matter how much i tippy-tapped the keyboard.  in the end i had to leave the comp in that condition and use the flashing LEDs on the front of the hard drives to tell me when the file copy had finished and then hold down the power button to force shutdown the comp.
...

I sometimes miss the activity LED present on most PC systems since i went with Macintosh. Sometimes a little bit more control would be useful (physical eject option for optical drives, activity LEDs, etc).

true - especially so with the new slimline CD/DVD drives.  with the old ones, if the CD refused to eject you could stick a paperclip in the wee hole at the side of the drawer and it would unlatch it.  with the new ones the only way to eject a stubborn disc is by restarting the comp

This doesn't sound good: Data losses in Snow Leopard bug
Users of the new Apple operating system Snow Leopard are experiencing massive data losses when logging into their machines under a guest account.

I hope no one's come across this one yet?

ouch!

good ol' apple.  you can always rely on them to shot themselves in the foot, every time things start going well!

only another 900 to go then, til apple stops blaming user error and fixes the problem.  :stick:

funnily enough, i was just about to revisit this thread to report a problem i've been having recently.  i dunno if it's directly related to SL or a problem with my MBP [but i never had it with leopard]:

i've had the comp keyboard completely freeze several times, when delivering a lecture, with the MBP connected to a plasma screen.  it's like it completely dies.  none of the buttons work at all [not even caps lock light] and the only way i've found to 'unfreeze' things is to hold the power button down until the comp shuts down. it happened about a week ago for the first time and has happened twice already this morning.

[EDIT: actually, i've just managed to unfreeze the comp by shutting the lid for a few seconds and then opening it again.  so a hard restart might not be required after all.  it's still a bit worrying [and annoying!] tho', as i'm never sure when my screen's suddenly going to freeze up, as i explain the mysteries of photoshop to one of my classes.]  :hmm:

frankly, there's not a helluva lot of difference between running leopard or running snow leopard.  to be honest the only reasons i bought snow leopard were:

  • i hated leopard with a passion [as regular readers of my spleen-venting will know  ]
  • it was dirt cheap & i think i owe apple at least the occasional legit purchase, after 'acquiring' most of my software through work, over the years

that said, i've not had any problems with SL [apart from my keyboard shenanigans mentioned above], so definitely a 'good' upgrade in my book [mind you, that wasnae exactly up against stiff competition, considering the hell leopard put me through].
