Subject: tiger - disappearing menubar items
a workmate came to me today with his macbook, which was misbehaving [mail.app hanging on launch ].  i sorted it by rebuilding all his mailboxes. however, while i was on his comp i noticed that none of the usual menubar doodads where there [ie. no clock. no battery level. no airport etc].  he told me they'd 'just disappeared, a while back.

i opened up system prefs and all those menubar items were turned off.  so i ticked them all back on again;  nothing happened.  they didnae reappear in the menubar.  i shutdown system prefs and opened it again... and all those items were turned off again.

i've run disc utility > repair permissions and it didnae find anything wrong and i've also confirmed  that his user account has admin priveleges [so can change system prefs settings].  so now i'm stumped.

any ideas?

Was going to make a comment about letting you near the computer... but no time. Seems to be just part of the Tiger experience (I can't remember it though):

(I’ve never seen that on Tiger, though, and my upgrade from Tiger is of rather recent date: yesterday!)
