Subject: iPod on the fritz...
This is just great. When my iPod started turning off mid-song, I blamed it on my Belkin car charger. Over time, the cable gets bent and the charger won't charge the iPod any more. This has happened to me before. Belkin was good with me and gave me a replacement charger. But it continues to happen, whether I have it connected to my Mac or not, charging via USB or Firewire. I reset it, it turns off. Most of the time it won't even reset. I know not what to do.

I got the iPod back in 2004, so I suppose it's to be expected. Still... considering how horrible the local radio is these days (See FCC radio station deregulation in the US), and not being able to pay a subscription for Satellite radio, my iPod is a must in the car for me. Not happy. Troubleshooting suggestions?

Which iPod is it? Is it the battery? My iPod mini dies within seconds of being detached from the power supply. Or perhaps the hard drive is knackered. You can replace both yourself pretty easily.

Mine is a fourth generation (Click Wheel) iPod. Thing is I don't know what's wrong with it. I left alone for the night and when I came back to it, plugged it into my Mac, I was able to reset it, it turned on, started syncing... all was dandy. I thought my iPod troubles were over. Then it shut off without warning.

Now had this happened while disconnected, I would have concluded it was the battery, which is not a big deal for me, considering I use it with a car charger most all the time. But this happened *while* it was connected to a power source. The screen is fine, the hard drive seems to be working alright (no strange nosies, even plays songs when its on), and the battery is not even an issue for me or the iPod since its connected, but it just turns off all of a sudden.

I still think it would be worth replacing the battery. It is the easiest of potential fixes. I'm guessing that when plugged in the battery is still somehow involved. I.e. With a laptop you could (used to be able to, anyway) take the battery out and still power it up if connected to the mains. That might not be the case with an iPod.

It was the logic board. Got a replacement board from a parts site for $40 including shipping. It's been charging, syncing and playing fine since Monday. Very happy.

Good news, Gamoe.

How easy was it to replace?

Thanks. Very easy! Just pried it open, disconnected and unscrewed the logic board, screwed in and connected the new one, snapped the casing back together again and it was done. My girlfriend helped me, and being the frugal couple that we are, we were both very proud of the accomplishment. The most nerve-racking part is worrying about damaging part of the casing when pulling it apart.
