Subject: A cargo cult fix works
I didn't see your rather spectacular symptoms: Calculator just hung with the "Updatingí¢â‚¬Â¦" message box displayed when I asked it to update currencies. So I quit it, then tried the traditional cargo cult Mac OS fixes: trash ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.calculator.plist -- no soap (symptoms unchanged); trash ~/Library/Application Support/Calculator/FinancialRates.plist -- bingo! I was able to load new currency rates without a problem.

What's going on? Well, comparing the new currency list with the old, it has fewer currencies (42 versus 46), and the conversion rates have more decimal digits (16 vs 6). If I were responsible for fixing this bug, I'd first check for a hang when trying to update the rate for a currency that was no longer listed.

strange, earlier versions of calculator used to quite regularly crash on me, while attempting to update exchange rates, while more recent versions seemed to run quite smoothly - until this problem reared its ugly head.

i'm surprised apple havenae fixed this yet.  i reported it as a bug a couple of weeks ago and it was marked as being 'already recorded' [or whatever terminology they use].  it cannae be that difficult surely?

BTW - your fix didnae work for me.  i deleted those two files and tried updating the exchange rates again and got exactly the same problems as before

[EDIT:]  anyone frustrated by this lack of a currency converter might like to check out this thread [look at the third 'hack' in the list]

i've just noticed that the update to 10,4,9 *didnae* fix this bug.  WTF is going on here? - when i reported this to apple way back in january they marked my bug report as a duplicate of an existing one, so they were aware of it way back then.

how feckin' long do they need to fix something so simple?!  :brick:
