Subject: snow leopard - ex posto facto
a new snow leopard thread for sharing your experiences and opinions *after* getting the DVD in your sweaty paws.

[Image: http://www.appletalker.net/grafix/SLdisc.jpg]

as i mentioned in the other two snow leopard threads, my DVD's just arrived and caught me unprepared.  i wasnae expecting it til later in the week, so havenae done any pre-installation backing up yet.  so i'm off to do that now, before i embark on my journey.

couple of first points to note:

1: the DVD label reads like a normal installer.  there's no mention of it being an upgrade disc or anything like that.
2: system requirements reads intel processor and 1GB or RAM.  again, no mention of an existing install of leopard.
3: build no. is 2Z691-6428-A
4: the accompanying 'brochure' is pretty minimalist.  just a folded CD/DVD insert, instead of the booklet we got with earlier upgrades.  it just briefly mentions changes to exposé, safari 4, quicktime X, microsoft exchange support and universal access.  there's one small section on 'refinements' which is pretty uninspiring... and that's it.   definitely a consolidating upgrade, rather than a bells'n'whistles one.

off to do my backing up now.  more later!

goodbye leopard hell© - welcome snow leopard hell©

i'm now stuck on this screen when trying to install:

[Image: http://www.appletalker.net/grafix/SLcantinstall.png]

just off to try the remedies listed here [i do have refit installed to allow me to boot from my linux partition, so - given that partition mapping shenanigans seems to be the prime suspect for generating this error - that seems to be a good place to start!]

Make sure there is no Backups.backupd folder on your hard drive's /. That is known to prevent SL from installing.

well, the 'trout-tickling' approach to the partition map [as outlined in the link i posted previously] didnae work, so i went off to apple's discussion forums, where i found a healthy 7 pages [so far] thread full of people who'd been balked by this.  for most of them partition tickling seemed to work, but for a few it didnae and [like me] they all seemed to have refit installed.  a nailed-on prime suspect then.

there were various other options for the refit crowd, such as fecking about with the disc formatter while booted into linux, but i couldnae be arsed.  seeing as how i intended to do a format and install anyway, i decided to wipe the hard drive and then run the snow leopard installer.  if nothing else, it would finally give me an answer to the burning question 'does snow leopard require an existing leopard intallation or not?'

and the verdict was:

[Image: http://www.appletalker.net/grafix/SLabout.png]

initial impressions?   - pretty much identical to leopard, with 1 or 2 small visual tweaks so far. but i'm mostly just getting prefs set up at the mo, so havenae had time to delve too deeply.

now on with the boring job of getting everything installed and configured.

Could you check if the SL update installer will install over your existing 10.6 installation?

Anyway, after reading John Siracusa's review at Ars I am suitably impressed with the underpinnings in Snow Leopard. Apple really have been hard at work and it's easy (and good) to see this is another stepping stone into the future. Grand Central Despatch and OpenCL sound awesome.

Also, I can now understand why Final Cut isn't 64 bit yet. QuickTime X is just the start of that long transition. And SL is probably why Aperture 3 isn't out yet - I'm guessing it may well rely on the two SL features I've linked to.

Finally as a PPC user I know I'm not really missing out on anything yet. It'll be awhile before applications take advantage of SL.  And I think to really get the benefits of SL you want a machine with quite a few cores, stacks of ram and decent graphics. All of which are out of my reach. I can't see the entry level machines getting too much benefit from SL. Could be wrong though.

well, obviously i'm not going to click the install button to find out, but it gets this far without complaining:

yep.  it's all very impressive. but unfortunately, as i found with leopard, all this advanced stuff ain't worth a shit if the entire system can be turned into an unstable unfixable timebomb, simply by running a software update.  :hmm:

i just hope apple made time in their improvements to the 'under the bonnet stuff' to ensure the foundations really were rock solid this time.  otherwise snow leopard is just another pretty house of cards.

Thanks for checking. I wonder what Art Vandelay was talking about at the other place.

dinnae expect sense out of anyone over there

... unless amazon have made a major cock-up in the UK?

the DVD is just advertised as a snow leopard disc.  there's no mention of it being an upgrade and the DVD label and packaging both declare it to be 'mac OSX v10.6 retail'

[Image: http://www.appletalker.net/grafix/SLamazon.png]

t'would be funny if there really were two versions and amazon had been sending out the wrong one for £23

[it seems to be selling well anyway.  when i ordered my copy it was no.3 in amazon's software rankings.  now it's no.1]

couple of newbies for you [if any of these existed in leopard [or even earlier!] then i didnae notice!]:

mail's internal format seems to have been updated [again!]
[Image: http://www.appletalker.net/grafix/SLmail.png]

new black styleee popup menus for the dock:
[Image: http://www.appletalker.net/grafix/SLdarkdock.png]

new icon size slider in finder windows set to icon view and with no toolbar:
[Image: http://www.appletalker.net/grafix/SLiconslider.png]

mouse prefs now separate from keyboard:
[Image: http://www.appletalker.net/grafix/SLmouseprefs.png]

date/time prefs now has an option to detect your location [and hence timezone] automatically.  it animates its findings by dropping a pin into the map, in the style of the maps application on the iphone:
[Image: http://www.appletalker.net/grafix/SLdatetime.png]

quicktime player has a new fugly icon:

OK - now it gets scary!

i've pretty much got all my basics set up and configured.  now i need to install adobe CS4 suite.  and as we all know, the finger of suspicion was pointed strongly in that direction, when i suffered my previous leopard hell© torments.

but it's got to be done. i cannae do my work without it, so here goes!...  :crossed:

There are plenty of people who use CS4 and have none of the issues you suffered from so there must be more to it than CS4 alone.
